Product Details
Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue' is a highly ornamental Grass for the flower garden, with powder blue leaves that hold their color the year round. Plants form spiky, 10″ mounds punctuated, come June, by 18″ flower stalks that turn from blue-green to a buff color that they hold all summer and into winter.
Festuca glauca is widely used in rock gardens, borders, and as ground cover, where its drought tolerance and low-maintenance needs make it a favorite among sustainable landscaping options. Combine this outstanding Blue Fescue with Hylotelephium 'Autumn Joy' for a matchup you can enjoy all year long.
Festuca, commonly known as Fescue, is a large genus with more than 350 species of perennial Grasses originating in the mountains and meadows of temperate climates around the globe. Some are rhizomatous, like turf Grasses, but those we grow as ornamentals form neat compact clumps. All are cool-season growers that thrive in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall and can be poorly adapted to hot humid climates. Plants prefer full sun and average to well-drained soil with moderate fertility and they are drought tolerant, making them a good choice for waterwise gardens. Festuca is appreciated for its fine foliage, which comes in a spectrum of colors from deep greens to striking blues and grays, adding a unique color contrast to garden compositions. Its ability to provide year-round interest, coupled with its resistance to pests and diseases, makes Festuca a valuable and attractive choice for creating visually appealing, low-care gardens.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP
We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Latin Name Pronunciation: fe-stoo-kuh
Festuca is a genus of more than 350 species of perennial grasses originating in the mountains and meadows of temperate climates around the globe. All are cool season growers that can be poorly adapted to hot humid climates. They grow well in average to well-drained soil with low to moderate fertility in full sun and are drought tolerant, good for waterwise gardens.
Growing Festuca
Plant the crown right at soil level. Spacing is indicated on the plant tag. Give them extra space in warmer climates to promote good air circulation.
Light: Full sun, can tolerate a little shade.
Watering:Low water needs once established.
Fertilizer: Does not need fertilizer. Avoid overly rich soils and thick wood mulch.
Soil: Adaptable to a wide range of soils with average to well-drained texture.
Pests/Diseases: Excess heat and humidity can cause fungal diseases; well drained soils and good air circulation helps, but Blue Fescues are not suited to the deep South.
Dividing/Transplanting: : Blue Fescues often die out in the center after a few years, especially in warmer climates. Divide and replant in early spring to refresh plants that have declined.
End-of-Season Care: Cool season grasses such as Fescues keep their good looks in winter and need no special care at that time. Evergreen grasses do not need to be cut back, but dead foliage can be raked out by hand in spring.
