Some annuals flag during a hot and humid stretch, while others sail right through without skipping a beat. These plants fill our garden beds and containers with constant color and interesting textures throughout the summer. At White Flower Farm, we grow quite a few plants that revel in steamy summers. Many aren’t annuals at all, but rather tropical or subtropical perennials or shrubs, well-adapted to southern conditions. We offer them as annuals because they won’t survive winters in many places. These plants are happy to be with northern gardeners for a spell. They bring so much to the garden party, we consider them essential, despite their autumn denouement. We have gathered below a selection of colorful plants that thrive in heat and humidity and may persist in warmer zones.
