Plants for Damp Soils
While many plants will rot in persistently damp soil, others will thrive, preferring to be consistently moist. A good number of the plants we see growing in wetlands, along streams, in moist woodland soils, and in roadside ditches are available in cultivation. They shine when planted in our home landscapes and really show their mettle in soggy spots. Plant these shrubs and perennials along stream banks, pond edges and in runoff areas that experience periodic flooding or remain damp for long periods. Roots of these plants will help stabilize soils in erosion-prone areas, especially if planted densely. We have selected mostly native plants for their adaptability, beauty, and wildlife value, but also include Japanese Iris, Siberian Iris, and a few others we would not be without.
