Gaultheria procumbens an evergreen ground cover native to eastern North America, provides a full year of interest. In spring the glossy green leaves partner with small nodding white or blush pink flowers, which turn to bright red berries that linger over winter to please the birds. When crushed, the leaves and berries emit the fresh scent of wintergreen. This creeper spreads gradually by rhizomes in evenly moist, acid soil. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Shipped in one quart pot.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

Beautiful Ground Cover fo Shade

A viewer from Rochester, NY

These are difficult to grow. Need Shade, moisture, and acid soil. Spray with deer repellent. The Wintergreen plants from Whiteflower are large, full plants loaded with berries.

This native American evergreen creeper produces bright red berries with a wintergreen flavor that remain on the plant from July to the next April.

LIGHT: To keep Wintergreen happy indoors, give it bright light but little direct sun. It can tolerate only 1-2 hours of direct sun early or late in the day.

TEMPERATURE: Wintergreen prefers cool temperatures of about 60-70°F.

WATERING: Keep the soil fairly moist, watering when the top 1/2 inch of potting mix is dry to the touch.

FERTILIZING: Fertilizing is seldom necessary.

CONTINUING CARE: Wintergreen should be planted outdoors in early spring in Zones 3-8. Give it a shady but bright spot with well-drained soil rich in organic matter, with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Prune it back to old wood in spring to encourage new green growth. Over time, a single plant can spread to 3-3 1/2ft in width. The dark green leaves turn red or reddish purple in winter.
