Beautyberries are grown primarily for the showy, bright lavender fruit that appears in autumn, but Callicarpa Pearl Glam® provides 3 seasons of interest, offering rich, dark purple foliage from spring to fall. These shrubs maintain an erect habit, which means they require a bit less elbow room than their cousins. Use them to add compelling contrast to mixed borders and landscapes over an extended season while attracting songbirds in fall. A Proven Winners®/Color Choice® variety. 'NCCX2' PP 28,312

Callicarpa is a genus of about 140 species of shrubs grown primarily for their shiny purple berries rather than for foliage or flowers, and the best of them are very attractive plants that can bring a distinctive look to late summer. Plants thrive in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil, and they tolerate drought. They fruit more heavily if several are planted together.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Big Disappointment

A viewer from Chicago, IL

I bought two of these three years ago. They are still thin sticks. They put out a few leaves in June every year and I do get the miniscule flowers, but leaves and flowers drop in three months. No berries, leaf color is blah, they are still about knee height. I am zone 6, they get regular water, are in sun, near each other for pollination. Bad purchase.

Ultimate disappointment

A viewer from Perry Hall, Maryland

I purchased one shrub, the Callicarpa Pearl Glam in the fall of 2019, and put it in a spot near where I had removed a young tree, The garden area had been tilled, with soil amender added. I received a :shrub - more like a dry root ball with 3or 4 dry twigs coming from it. I had read another review stating it "shot up" the first summer it was planted, so I thought it would like the newly prepared garden area and do well in 2020. Needless to say, my "shrub" remains a bunch of twigs. No leaves, no sign of life. I had really wanted to try this, as it is one of the few full sun areas of my property (most are sun or dappled shade, but not deep shade). What a disappointment!
I'm going back to purchasing daffodils and deer resistant bulbs, but will purchase my shrubs locally from now on.

Ordered two Callicarpa Pearl Glam

A viewer from Westchester, NY

I ordered two Callicarpa Pearl Glam and planted in full sun. They were small to start with but shot up quickly (over two/three feet in one summer). While its tiny flowers are hardly noticeable, the dark purple leaves are decorative. I am looking forward to the berries!

Highly disappointing

A viewer from KS

I ordered four shrubs from this nursery; three arrived in good shape, which is why this one stood out so much, as it was half-dead, with more leaves shriveled and crunchy on the bottom of the box than remained on the plant.
I contacted customer service, since it was so obviously NOT up to the same quality as the other three they'd sent.
I was told, "water it."
Their guarantee only counts if it's fully dead, not if you've paid full-price for a shrub that normally you'd give two bucks for at a big-box, since you have to nurse it back to health.
Now I've got a hole in my planned landscape, and I'll be buying a shrub for it elsewhere.

I am sorry one of the Callicarpa received was not of the same quality as the other three plants and I apologize a replacement was not issued for the plant when you contacted Customer Service. I will be contacting you by email regarding compensation.
Sincerely,
Cathy

Latin Name Pronunciation: kal-ih-kar'puh

Callicarpa is one of the best fruiting shrubs for mid-fall color; its shiny lavender berries are a great attraction in the landscape at a time when many plants are winding down their display. Plants produce small pink flowers in August, but it's the berries that produce the big show. 'Early Amethyst' sets fruit in early September here in Connecticut, well ahead of the species.

Callicarpa are fast growers, spreading about as wide as they are tall. Fruit production is better if several are planted together. Plants are small enough to fit easily into a perennial or mixed border, perhaps near Ornamental Grasses, Perovskia, and late-blooming Rudbeckias for a satisfying late-season display.

Plants prefer full sun and tolerate partial shade, and average, well-drained soil. Once established, Callicarpa is drought tolerant. No serious pest or disease problems. Seldom requires fertilizer.

Because plants flower on the current season's growth, they can be pruned hard (to as low as 4–6″) in early spring. Plants will be smaller than they would be if left unpruned, but their stems will be lined from head to toe (rather than just at the tips of the branches) with clusters of berries.
