Product Details

Hordeum jubatum (commonly referred to as Foxtail Barley or Squirrel-tail Grass) is a short-lived perennial grass that’s native to much of western North America. It’s a cool season plant – that is, it does most of its growing in spring and fall and slows down (and may go fully dormant) in the heat of midsummer. It’s grown for its lovely wheat-colored inflorescences that dance in a breeze and glimmer like spun gold in long Autumn light.

Lovely in cut flower arrangement, but harvest before seedheads ripen and shatter. If allowed to ripen seed, sharp awns attached to seeds can harm animals. This grass can be overaggressive in Western states and may be listed as invasive even though it is native.

Shipping

Shipping
Every state has agricultural regulations that restrict the shipment of certain plants. We're sorry, but we cannot ship this item to the following states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

It is an attractive ornamental grass known for its feathery plumes and ease of cultivation.

Growing Hordeum

Plant the crown just at soil level, or slightly above if you will be adding mulch. Spacing is indicated on the back of the plant tag.

Light: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

Watering: Dry to medium.

Fertilizer: Not necessary, although an occasional topdressing of compost is beneficial. Mulch with dried Grass clippings or light shredded bark/Pine bark.

Soil: Can grow in a range of soil conditions, from sandy to clay soils. However, it performs best in well-drained soil.

Pests/Diseases: Generally pest- and disease-free.

Dividing/Transplanting: Divide if needed, or to increase the number of plants, in early spring or fall.

End-of-Season Care:  While generally low-maintenance, you may need to manage the spread of foxtail barley as it can self-seed and become invasive in some areas. Regularly remove spent flower stalks to prevent self-seeding if this is a concern. Cutting back the plant in late winter or early spring before new growth begins can help maintain a tidy appearance and promote healthy growth.
