Loropetalum is a tiny genus of mostly evergreen shrubs and small trees in the Witch Hazel family (Hamamelidaceae), from India, China, and Japan. The name is derived from the Greek words for strap and petal, an apt moniker for these plants which bear slightly fragrant clusters of strappy, fringed flowers in early spring. Commonly called Chinese Witch Hazel, the flowers are indeed quite similar to that more familiar species. These easy-care plants are unbothered by most pests and are relatively deer-resistant. Plant in humus-rich, acidic, moist, well-drained soil, in sun to part shade (afternoon shade is good in hotter areas). At the Northern end of its range, site Loropetalum in a spot that is protected from cold winter winds and mulch well to protect roots from frigid weather and freeze/thaw cycles. Plant as a screen or hedge, in a woodland or perennial garden, or close by to brighten your early spring days.
Exploring unique plants and sharing them with our customers is one of the greatest joys of our work. We’ve gathered a selection of remarkable shrubs and perennials that northern gardeners traditionally considered exotic specialties for “warm zone” gardens only. As growing conditions and Hardiness Zones shift, many of our customers now garden in milder climates, opening new possibilities for color and texture. These new offerings can also be treated as container plantings and overwintered indoors in colder areas. We invite you to browse these exciting selections and check each plant’s Hardiness Zone to find the best fit for your garden.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP
We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

Latin Name Pronunciation: lor-oh-pet' ah-lum
Loropetalum is a tiny genus of mostly evergreen shrubs and small trees in the Witch Hazel family, from India, China, and Japan. Plant in humus-rich, moist, well-drained, acidic soil in sun to part shade (afternoon shade in hotter areas). At the northern end of its range, protect from cold winter winds and mulch well; may drop leaves in winter.
Light: Full sun to part shade, with best flowering in sun, although some afternoon shade in hotter areas is beneficial.
Soil: Plant in soil that is humus-rich, with neutral to acidic pH. Soil should be moist but well-drained; intolerant of soggy soils.
Watering: Medium water needs; water deeply during drought.
Fertilizing: Use a slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring after the first growing season if growth is slow; compost may suffice. Fertilize after any hard pruning.
Pruning: Little pruning is required, although you may wish to do so to maintain the size and form of the plant. If your Chinese Witch Hazel outgrows its space, it can be cut back hard just after blooms fade in spring to renovate and reinvigorate.
Pests/Diseases: This plant is unbothered by most pests but is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soil.
