Purple-Flowering & Purple-Foliage Plants
Purple is one of the most popular colors in the garden, perhaps because it pairs beautifully with green, its near-opposite on the color wheel. The spectrum of purples can range from the soft shades of Wisteria and some Lavenders to the vivid, dark, velvety shades coveted in Tall Bearded Iris and the blossoms of some Violas, Clematis, Salvias, and Angelonias, to name a few. Gathered here you’ll find a wide array of purple-flowering plants that includes select perennials, annuals, and shrubs. Also featured is a favorite purple-foliage plant, Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyerianus), with iridescent dark purple leaves that make it a compelling mixer in summer containers and borders. Incorporating a variety of plants that exhibit varying shades of purple into your garden can create beautiful drifts of tone-on-tone color. Purple plants also mix well with many other hues. Many are superb with yellows, and they create dramatic effects in the company of reds, blues, and pinks.
