Product Details

Salvia 'Amistad' produces tall stems topped with regal purple flowers that have striking, near-black bracts. A favorite annual from our plant trials, this beauty brings you close-up views of hummingbirds seeking its nectar as it blossoms profusely from early summer until frost. PP 23,578

Pollinators and hummingbirds love the spikes of densely packed Salvia flowers which come in a range of colors: white, pink, red, purple and blue. Long-lasting Salvia blooms can extend from late spring into fall with dependable color. Salvias are especially valuable where summers are hot and dry, for they ignore heat and go steadily about the business of making flowers. Because some Salvias endure colder climates better than others, we classify certain varieties as Perennial Salvia and other less hardy varieties as Annual Salvia. The genus Salvia is part of the Mint (Lamiaceae) family, so most all have square stems and a strong scent when their leaves are crushed.

We categorize this plant as an 'Annual' because it does not survive winter here in our Zone 6 location in Connecticut, so we enjoy a single season display. This plant is truly a tender perennial and will return year after year in warmer areas of the country, perennial for Zones 8 to 11.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Please contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-503-9624 or email us at [email protected]. Please include your order number or customer number when contacting us.

Impressive Annual!

chez.chel from CT 6b/7a

Planted a single Salvia Amistad in 2024 and it was still blooming brilliantly on Nov. 1st at the edge of zone 7a in CT. My first year growing it, thrilled based on foliage, stems, long-lasting blooms, and robust growth from a few inches to a 4x4 foot beauty. Awesome space filler. Deadheaded only twice.

Quietly Stunning!

A viewer from Chapel Hill, North Carolina

In the Piedmont area of North Carolina, our summers are hotter and hotter - and yet Salvia 'Amistad' performed brilliantly all summer long. It’s now October and it’s still going strong. I’ve never found such a strong and lovely addition to my garden!

Portland Oregon Zone 8b

A viewer from Portland Oregon

I ordered this plant three years ago. It has come through two winters and one 117 degree heat dome like a champ. And, of course, the hummers and bees fight over it. Great plant.

Beyond Expectations

A viewer from Mid Atlantic

After watching too many Gardeners World episodes I fell in love with salvia. Having never grown it before I thought I’d give it a go. It has become the most beautiful backdrop in the garden and the hummingbirds love it. It grew so well I had to thin it out a bit. Paired with verbena and white coneflower, its the new jewel of the garden. I highly recommend.

Impressed!!

A viewer from OR

My plants arrived today. Once again kudos to White Flower Farms! The plants arrived in perfect condition. The packaging was carefully and well done. I'm so excited to grow the Salvia Amistad. I live in a sunny place, and the soil seems just right for this plant. Thank you for the care and quality that has impressed me each time I have ordered from your company.

Latin Name Pronunciation: sal'vee-uh

Plant Salvia in full sun and well-drained soil. For perennial varieties in Zones 5 and colder, drainage is especially important in winter. Cut back hard, to 3-4" after flowering to keep plants compact and to promote rebloom.
