Daffodil Companions
Each spring, Daffodils welcome spring with cheerful reassurance that winter is over and gardens will come alive again. These sunny, carefree plants put on a colorful, extended display that lasts for weeks in cool early season weather. But once the flowers have faded, a less attractive show must go on. Daffodil foliage begins to yellow, and while the temptation may be to remove or braid the withering foliage, doing so will hamper the bulb from storing enough energy to bloom the following spring. Instead, consider masking the fading foliage by choosing leafy companion plants that size up just in time to conceal the decay. Hostas, Lady’s Mantle, Ferns, Daylilies, Geraniums, and Nepetas all do the job beautifully. Brunneras, Hellebores, and Pulmonarias excel as both companions and coverups for smaller Daffodil varieties, as they emerge and bloom together, then fill out to conceal unsightly ripening foliage.
