Heat & Drought-Tolerant Plants
Plants have developed many adaptations that allow them to conserve water and photosynthesize efficiently in times of drought. These include narrow blades (grasses) or leaves reduced in size, deep roots, leathery leaves or those covered with light hairs or a waxy coating. Succulents store water in leaves or stems; tubers and thick rhizomes provide underground water storage. Once established, these plants won’t shrivel up and die if it doesn’t rain every week. In moderate climates they require little or no extra water, except during extreme drought and in especially hot, dry regions.
