Salt-Tolerant Plants
Coastal properties often suffer wind-borne salt spray or, as sea levels rise and storms intensify, saltwater inundation that damages or kills plants. Even those of us who live inland can see our plants experience leaf burn, defoliation, or death, from road salt or brine applied to roads or driveways. Only a few very specialized plants can withstand the most intense salt exposure found directly on the shore or in the intertidal zone, where roots may be flooded. But some exemplary garden plants are relatively tolerant of less intense salty conditions. These are good choices to plant along roadsides and in coastal yards subject to salt spray. Create a windbreak with a hedge of these salt-tolerant shrubs and plant salt-tolerant shrubs and perennials on the windward side of the garden. Well-drained soil that allows salt to leach away in case of inundation is a plus.
