Plants for Heat & Humidity
A muggy hot summer here in New England pales in comparison with the prolonged heat and humidity that occur throughout the deep South. Plants that aren’t up to the dog days of summer here surely aren’t great candidates for Southern gardens. We get calls from customers newly transplanted to Southern states, who don’t know what they can plant with such heat and humidity. They pine for the plants they left behind and wonder if they will be able to grow any familiar, beloved plants. We have assembled below a group of trees, shrubs, and perennials that are winter hardy in colder zones yet keep their good looks in times of heat and humidity - even in sultry Southern conditions. We also include a handful of traditional warm-climate shrubs with modern breeding that extends their range further north (be sure to check the zone in each listing), for the adventurous, curious or sentimental.
Coreopsis lanceolata
Echinacea pallida
