Enjoy the big, flashy flowers of Trumpet Vine without its rampant growth. Tecoma stans Chicklet® Gold is a compact, low-maintenance shrub with clusters of sunny yellow trumpet-shaped flowers loved by hummingbirds. Blooming from summer to fall without deadheading, this standout for hot climate gardens (Zones 8-11), makes a dramatic container plant on sunbaked patios plant in colder areas. A Proven Winners®/Color Choice® variety. 'SMNTSC' PP 35,751

The 7 species of shrubs and small trees in the Tecoma genus are members of the Trumpet Vine family (Bignoniaceae), all known for their colorful trumpet-shaped flowers. Known as Trumpet Bush or Esperanza, those in common cultivation are native to Florida, Texas, and the Southwestern states. Other species range south into the West Indies and northern Argentina. These tropical-looking, heat-loving plants flower freely from late spring/early summer until frost, when grown in full sun, attracting hummingbirds and resisting deer all the while. They grow in fertile, loamy soil but are adapted to sandy or rocky soils as well. Cultivated varieties are hardy in Zones 8-11. Smaller cultivars make great patio plants around a sunny swimming pool and can be overwintered indoors in a bright sunny room.

Exploring unique plants and sharing them with our customers is one of the greatest joys of our work. We’ve gathered a selection of remarkable shrubs and perennials that northern gardeners traditionally considered exotic specialties for “warm zone” gardens only. As growing conditions and Hardiness Zones shift, many of our customers now garden in milder climates, opening new possibilities for color and texture. These new offerings can also be treated as container plantings and overwintered indoors in colder areas. We invite you to browse these exciting selections and check each plant’s Hardiness Zone to find the best fit for your garden.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

The 7 species of shrubs and small trees in the Tecoma genus, members of the Trumpet Vine family, (Bignoniaceae), range from Florida, Texas and the Southwestern states south to Argentina. These heat-loving, deer-resistant plants flower freely in full sun and are tolerant of drought once established in fertile soil in Zones 8-11.

Light: Full, hot, baking sun keeps these plants at their floriferous best.

Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil is ideal, although plants will grow in somewhat sandy or rocky soil.

Watering: Water deeply to get plants established. Plants are fairly drought-tolerant once established. Water during drought and regularly if you are growing your plant in a container.

Fertilizing: Trumpet Bush doesn’t require a lot of fertilization, but if growth is slow or the plant is reluctant to bloom, apply a slow-release balanced fertilizer or one lower in nitrogen during the growing season.

Pruning: Leggy varieties can be snipped back to encourage bushiness, but improved cultivars are bred to be compact and need little or no pruning. Deadheading will prevent the formation of beanlike seed pods and encourage continued blooming. If plants die back during a cold spell, remove dead stems and look for rapid regrowth in spring.

Pests/Diseases: These plants have no serious pests. If grown indoors, monitor for spider mites and whiteflies.
