Ideal for smaller spaces, this slow-growing, compact Chinese Redbud puts on a profuse display of rose-mauve blossoms in spring. 'Don Egolf' doesn't form seed pods, so it will not spread around. Plants are adaptable to many soils, including those that tend to be dry (but avoid wet, poorly drained sites), and show some resistance to the fungal disease that attacks our native Redbud. A U.S. National Arboretum introduction.
Cercis is a small genus of about six species of deciduous trees and shrubs in the Pea family, distributed over a wide area across both coasts of North America to the Mediterranean and East Asia. Clusters of lavender-pink or white blossoms sprout right from the branches and trunks in early spring, soon followed by heart-shaped leaves. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun or dappled shade.
