Product Details
Found among the rolling moors of Europe, Sesleria autumnalis (Autumn Moor Grass) looks particularly fine in fall when its narrow flower spikes appear dusted with white sugar. The clump-forming Grass, evergreen in Zone 7, has rough, narrow leaves that are an attractive shade of chartreuse. It is nonetheless an ornamentally modest plant and tends to look its best when used en masse as a ground cover in informal areas. Autumn Moor Grass grows well in rocky sites, along coastlines, and even beneath trees (including Black Walnuts) where there is dappled sunlight. It tolerates drought and may help control erosion. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Sesleria, commonly called Moor Grass, is a genus of approximately 20 perennial Grasses from Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. These durable easy-to-grow, clump-forming, cool-season Grasses bloom early, grow actively from early spring until hot weather arrives, resuming growth in autumn, and remaining evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild winter areas. Once established, Seslerias can tolerate more heat and drought than most cool-season Grasses. They thrive in well-drained soils in full sun to part shade and are resilient, low-maintenance plants that adapt readily to poor and alkaline soils, an asset in sustainable landscapes. Sesleria species usually have a clumping growth habit, with fine-textured blades arranged in dense tufts. Inflorescences are dainty, more like punctuation than showy plumes, contributing subtle color and interesting texture to attractive, sometimes colorful foliage. There is a good place for Moor Grass in countless garden settings, whether used as a demure tuft filling spaces between bolder perennials, in a rock garden, as a groundcover or edging plant, or as living mulch in dappled shade beneath a canopy tree or upright shrub such as Aronia arbutifoliaor Witch Hazel (Hamamelis).

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP
We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Latin Name Pronunciation: sess-lair' ee-ah
Sesleria, commonly called Moor Grass, is a genus of approximately 20 perennial Grasses from Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. These durable, easy-to-grow cool-season Grasses bloom early, grow actively from early spring until hot weather arrives, and remain evergreen or semi-evergreen in mild winter areas. Seslerias are adapted to harsh conditions, a wide range of soils (including alkaline), and tolerate more heat and drought than most cool-season Grasses.
Growing Sesleria
Plant the crown just at soil level, or slightly above if you will be adding mulch. Spacing is indicated on the back of the plant tag.
Light: Sun.
Watering: Dry to medium.
Fertilizer: Not necessary, although an occasional topdressing of compost is beneficial. Mulch with dried Grass clippings or light shredded bark/Pine bark.
Soil: Well-drained soil; tolerates high alkalinity, rocky, poor soils, regular garden soil, and juglone from Black Walnut trees.
Pests/Diseases: Generally pest- and disease-free.
Dividing/Transplanting: Divide if needed, or to increase the number of plants, in early spring or fall.
End-of-Season Care: Most Seslerias will remain green through the winter. Cut back to the ground to make way for fresh new foliage in very early spring, before growth begins. If evergreen in your climate, lightly trim any winter-burned foliage. Leave foliage trimmings in place as mulch.
