Product Details
Intricate patterns of creamy yellow etch the dark green leaves of Philodendron 'Birkin,' and no two are exactly alike. The oval leaves are offered up on vertical stems, as if to encourage closer study. We love this plant for desktops and bookshelves, but as it grows, it may require a spot on the floor.
The genus Philodendron consists of approximately 500 species of tropical, evergreen perennials native to the warm, humid understory of Central and South America. In their natural environment, these plants grow by climbing trees or as epiphytes on trees and rocks. They are categorized into two main types: climbing varieties with trailing stems and non-climbing (upright, bushlike) species. Renowned for their lush foliage, which varies widely in leaf size and shape, Philodendrons are popular as low-maintenance houseplants. Like other members of the Arum family (Araceae), they are toxic to humans and pets if ingested.

WEATHER PERMITTING - Working with Mother Nature
In our business, we work closely with Mother Nature. In the colder months when we stipulate that an item is shipped “weather permitting”, that means temperatures outside our shipping facility in northwestern Connecticut and along the shipping route must be warm enough for tender plants to survive in unheated delivery trucks. Our practice of waiting for windows of milder weather may result in the occasional delay, but our customers tend to appreciate the care we take to make certain their plants arrive in the very best possible condition. Questions? Don’t hesitate to call our customer service staff at 1-800-411-6159.HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED
The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.
WHEN WE SHIP
We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. The genus Philodendron consists of approximately 500 species of tropical, evergreen perennials native to the warm, humid understory of Central and South America. In their natural environment, these plants grow by climbing trees or as epiphytes on trees and rocks. Renowned for their lush foliage, which varies widely in leaf size and shape, Philodendrons are popular as low-maintenance houseplants.
Light/Temperature: Philodendron is an adaptable houseplant that thrives in bright indirect light and temperatures of 60°F and above.
Watering: Water when the top 1" of the potting mix is dry to the touch.
Humidity: Plants thrive in moderate to high humidity levels. Keep away from radiators and vents that blow dry air from heating or air conditioning systems. Set pots on top of pebbles in a tray with water (don’t let water touch the pot) or run a humidifier nearby. Wiping leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust occasionally is beneficial.
Fertilizer: When plants are in active growth from spring through summer, use a balanced (20-20-20), water-soluble houseplant fertilizer monthly, diluted to half strength.
Please Note: Due to its toxic sap, site this plant out of the reach of children and pets and wear gloves when pruning; sap inside the plant may irritate sensitive skin if touched.
