Product Details

The first ever Sempervivum with golden foliage, Chick Charms® 'Gold Nugget' is bound to get lots of attention. It’s a unique variety that puts on an extended color show. The fleshy leaves, which are tipped in red, change to bright green in summer, and back to gold with fiery red tips in winter. Hardy to Zone 4 and robust, this succulent will keep the colors coming unless it’s covered in snow. PP 28,284

The name of this genus was derived by Pliny from semper vivo and means, literally, live forever. Although each leaf rosette dies after flowering, there always seems to be an abundance of new offsets (the "chicks") to take its place. These fleshy, evergreen plants are invaluable, carefree elements for troughs, rock gardens, or wall crevices. They are content in average to poor soil as long as it is very well-drained and in full sun. It's hard to limit yourself to just one variety.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

WHEN WE SHIP

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available. Estimated dates for shipping are indicated in the green Shipping Details box for each item. Please supply a street address for delivery. Kindly contact us with two weeks notice, if you'll be away at the expected time of delivery.

OUR GUARANTEE

We guarantee to ship plants that are in prime condition for growing. If your order is damaged or fails to meet your expectations, we will cheerfully replace or refund it. Top smooshed coming out of the container with very wet soil.

A viewer from Georgia, US

This makes the second time ordering these flowers and I must say it was better received the first time. They look awful. The bottom row leaves are already black. The top is smooshed. I can't believe this is what is being sent out to customers. The flowers were coming out of their pots and the box was filled with the dirt. I feel like i just wasted my money on dead plants. I wish i could attach pictures.

Arrived Squashed and Out of Pots!

A viewer from Las Cruces NM

This is completely unlike WFF in that everything else I have bought has arrived perfectly packed and in their pots with covers and lots of secure boxes. These arrived out of their pots, dry as a bone and one was squashed very badly and the other broken into 3 pieces. Each was in their tall box, but why weren't they secured as usual? I scooped up the pitiful, little guys and hydrated them, then planted them. It's just so NOT like WFF that I am incredibly disappointed. My plants have to travel all the way to New Mexico - I get it; but I buy from WFF because I know they will get here in great shape. Or did.

Squashed plants!

A viewer from Las Cruces, NM

I have received many plants from WFF and all arrived in perfect condition EXCEPT THESE 2, they arrived out of their pots, dry as bones and beaten to a pulp. One is literally crushed into pieces. So disappointed! I planted the "remains" in a pot to see if they could be salvaged and/or rehydrated, but, for the price, I expected white glove packing and treatment for these little cuties. Sad!

Fair , poor packing

A viewer from Eau Claire, WI.

Ordered two plants. One was in good shape the other was out of the packing / pot and kinda smashed up. Looks rather distressed. Will plant them tomorrow and hope for the best. Neither of them resemble the color like the photos. They are more burgundy and cream in color.

Sempervivum Gold Nugget

A viewer from TX

Arrived today: lovely! Big and bushy with many babies, pot is very full. Box not too big, well wrapped and paper to fill the box. Lost a little soil but every leaf is intact. Lovely colors. I had one in 2017, it was lovely and strong all winter but when the sprinklers came on it drowned. Entirely my fault. So I ordered this new one and will keep it high and dry in a nice heavy pot so the wind does not blow it around. Very happy. White Flower Farm is the best in my experience. Central TX zone 8B

Latin Name Pronunciation: sem-per-vie'vum

CULTURE: Sempervivum plants need full sun. Plants prefer average to rather poor, sandy or rocky soil, which must drain quickly. Do not fertilize. Space 6" apart. Plants have few problems except when soil is too heavy or too damp. In Europe, plants are often grown tucked into corners of rooftops, without the benefit of any soil at all. That led to another common name, Houseleeks.

SUGGESTED USE: In rock gardens, trough gardens, wall crevices, dry gardens, edging, in strawberry jars or other containers.

"Sempervivum" means "lives forever," which plants seem to do under the correct conditions. The original rosette of leaves dies after it flowers, two, three, or more years after planting. But by then, new offsets are already there to take the place of the mother plant. "Hens and Chickens" refers to the fact that a mature clump reminds one of a hen surrounded by her chicks.
