New! Fothergilla x intermedia 'Mount Airy'

An upgrade on an already fantastic North American native shrub, Fothergilla x intermedia ‘Mount Airy’ features exceptional vigor, heavy bloom, and excellent fall color. A selection by plantsman Michael Dirr, this substantially sized, three-season favorite has all the hallmarks of a great Fothergilla—white, fragrant, bottlebrush-shaped flowers in mid spring, rounded leaves in shades of green to blue-green in summer, and spectacular autumn foliage to include scarlet, fiery orange, and golden hues. A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Fothergilla, a genus in the Witch Hazel family, offers some outstanding deciduous shrubs that are not as widely known or planted as they deserve to be. There are only two species, F. major and F. gardenii, both commonly found in southeastern North America. They thrive in moist, acid, organic soil, and bloom profusely in full sun. Their rounded, dense shape is mirrored by rounded, deep green—sometimes blue-green—foliage that in fall turns yellow, orange, and red, often all on the same plant.

HOW PLANTS ARE SHIPPED

The size of the plants we ship has been selected to reduce the shock of transplanting. For some, this means a large, bareroot crown. Others cannot travel bareroot or transplant best if grown in containers. We ship these perennials and annuals in 1 pint pots, except as noted. We must point out that many perennials will not bloom the first year after planting, but will the following year, amply rewarding your patience. We ship bulbs as dormant, bare bulbs, sometimes with some wood shavings or moss. Shrubs, Roses, vines, and other woody plants may be shipped bareroot or in pots. The size of the pot is noted in the quick facts for each item.

We ship our bulbs and plants at the right time for planting in your area, except as noted, with orders dispatched on a first-come, first-served basis by climate zone. We also ship a wide range of containers and planters, tools, supplies, fertilizers, garden wear, garden decor items, as well as indoor decorations like wreaths and dried bouquets when available.
