Dear Gardening Friend,

The nature of our business means that we seldom have the pleasure of meeting our customers face to face and the absence of that personal contact is, we think, a loss to both parties. At our end, we miss the chance to learn what you want, what you need, where we can improve, and, if there are grounds, that you are pleased with us. For you, we hope a visit helps illuminate the nature of the organization that aims to serve you and your garden, and maybe also shows you some of the things we do in our own gardens that would be of interest. Here, as elsewhere, there is no substitute for listening.

For this reason, we strongly encourage attendance at our Open House Day, which falls this year on Saturday, June 25. This is the day that we welcome old friends and new to enjoy cucumber sandwiches and iced tea on the lawn by our house and to wander our gardens at leisure, with no pressure to shop. While a slow spring means that the gardens are somewhat behind their usual schedule, there is plenty to see and enjoy, perhaps crowned by the magnificent display of Blackmore and Langdon Tuberous Begonias, which looks to be another standout in this, its 55th year. Join our head gardener for a guided tour of the display gardens at 1:30 p.m. (meet near the iced tea table).

A recent tradition is a contest for the best hat worn by an attendee, which has developed into something of a grudge match between a few very talented amateur milliners. We award a White Flower Farm gift certificate worth $100 and, of course, the bragging rights that come with having your name and picture sent out in one of our E-mails to our customers. No, it's not the Tonys, but it has produced some very creative displays and a good many laughs.

Tea service begins around 2:30, continues until the grub runs out. Last year, we went through 50 loaves of bread and the sandwich staff, all family and friends, then lingered around to serve tea and collect compliments. We look forward to yours.

White Flower Farm Plant Sale

To add to the allure of a drive to the nursery, we've staged our end-of-spring sale for Friday and Saturday, June 24-25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. We can promise extremely good bargains on unsold product, including both plants and merchandise, all top quality. We cannot, however, accurately predict exactly what items will be on offer because we will be desperately trying to sell them at full price right up to the last minute. After many years, we still admire the intensity of bargain hunters who arrive in $90,000 cars to save five bucks on a plant. That, of course, is what makes markets, and people, so interesting. It might make sense to arrive early, exhaust yourself saving money, wander the gardens, snack, and call it a day well spent.

Sincerely,

P.S. Please note that the 64th Annual House Tour of Litchfield homes will not coincide with our Open House in 2011. This worthy benefit falls on Saturday, July 9.
