A charming Basil, as ornamental as it is flavorful, 'Spicy Globe' forms a compact mound of very small green leaves that are topped in late summer with a cloud of fragrant tiny white flowers. As its name suggests, the aromatic leaves are pungent, with an appealing flavor that has a little bite. This Basil is great for cooks in a hurry since the tender leaves are so small you really don't need to chop them -- just pinch from the plant for use in everyday cooking. Grows 6-12in tall.
Basil has a delightful rich, sweet, spicy flavor with overtones of mint and clove. Some varieties are strong and others are rich and buttery -- good reasons to grow several. Crush or mince the leaves or leave them whole in salads and sandwiches. And of course, fresh Basil pesto is the king of pasta sauces. The perfect partner for ripe Tomatoes, Basil is equally delicious paired with Peppers and Onions. For information on growing Basil, click "Growing Guide" at left.
