The End of an Era
This month, White Flower Farm lost its former Director of Horticulture, renowned plantsmen David Smith. David was the essence of this business. In 1954, David was invited over from England as a propagator. He joined a very small and very amateurish nursery that was in its fourth year in operation. He quickly became our horticultural expert and taught many of us the techniques that we continue to use today. He served with skill, determination, professionalism, and grace until his retirement in 1990. Even after that, he remained an enthusiastic and positive presence. We will never forget his days in the field, inventorying plants and making notations in his spiral bound notebooks. David touched many lives in the world of horticulture. He was loved and will be dearly missed.
